Match Report

A powerful second half display helped Girvan overcome Muirkirk to move into the third round of the cup. Muirkirk were twice ahead in the first where they played some attractive football but four second half goals saw the Super League side through.

Muirkirk opened the scoring in the 10th minute when the Girvan defence cleared the ball straight to Patrick Hamill who sent a low drive in to the corner of the net. It took Girvan till the 40th minute to draw level as Tony Murphy set up Michael Reilly to fire the ball into the net. Within in a minute Muirkirk were in front again when Ryan Beveridge lifted the ball into the top corner.

Right on half time Scott Johnstone in the Girvan goal saved well from a Shaun Murtagh effort to keep the lead down to one. Two minutes after the interval David Cunningham got his first of the season when he worked his way into the penalty area and equalised with a neat finish.

On 54 minutes Girvan went ahead after David Jardine had a shot parried and Michael Reilly, following up, drove the ball into the net. It was all Girvan now and Muirkirk keeper, George Scott denied Michael Reilly with a fine save.

Midway through the half Michael Mossie burst forward and set up Tony Murphy who scored from six yards. The fifth goal arrived a minute later when Michael Reilly netted his tenth of the season after receiving a pass from Tony Murphy.
