Girvan visited Victoria Park to meet their promotion rivals from last seasons Ayrshire District League and came away comfortable winners. It was a good performance from the Hamilton Park side as they physically overpowered the Irvine side.
Two changes were made from last weeks starting line up as Michael Mossie was on holiday and Mark Cameron had missed training due to work commitments. In came Jack McDowall and Mark Doolan with Stephen Auld on the bench.
The game was only 3 minutes old when Davie Jardine beat the offside trap and fired a fierce strike across the 6 yard box but there were no takers. Vic’s replied after 8 minutes when Scott Johnstone raced from goal but his clearance when straight to a Vics player who lobbed it back over the bar.
Girvan continued to press and were winning their battles all over the park. Davie Cunningham got free in the box but Lamb saved well from 10 yards out. In the 26th minute Tony Murphy had his effort from the edge of the box well saved by the keeper. But eventually the pressure paid off when a minute later Davie Jardine volleyed home from 18 yards after a Stevie McCreadie corner fell to him. Michael Reilly then had a strike from the edge of the box which just cleared the bar before Vics replied with a free kick from 25 yards out which clipped the top of the bar although Scott Johnstone had it covered.
In the 41st Minute Girvan extended their lead after a Michael Reilly shot came off the back of a defender and fell to Davie Cunningham who tucked it into the corner of the net from 10 yards with Lamb stranded.
So in at half time with a well deserved lead , 2-0.
It took the visitors only 23 seconds to extend their lead in the second half. From a good move down the right the ball was played in behind the Vics back four, as they all claimed offside Jack McDowall continued his run and finished well from 8 yards out.
Mark Doolan nearly got on the scoresheet on the hour mark but his header at the back post went wide. The game was over as a contest 2 minutes later when Ryan Singleton had a kick at Robert Paterson, who had come on for Davie Cunningham, and received a straight red.
Michael Reilly then blasted just over with a free kick from 20 yards out. Next up was Robert Paterson who beat his marker but the keeper foiled his effort. Into injury time and Vics got a consolation goal. A corner was cleared but the assistant referee put his flag up as he spotted an infringement in the box. Davie Adams scored from the spot.
A good win as well as an improved performance from recent weeks. No failures and it was good to see Stephen Auld in a Girvan shirt as his pace lit up the game in the closing stages.
